Last night I was excited to go to ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) for the screening of “British Style Genius: Breaking the Rules” for Day 3 of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week.
Vivienne Westwood was without a doubt the pioneer of punk culture with her shocking and daring designs that were the antithesis to the hippie movement at the time of the early 70s.
It’s evident that Galliano and McQueen took their influences from Westwood, Galliano with his cuts and designs and McQueen with his sense of shock and audaciousness. Look up his collection titled “Highland Rape” and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
Out of the three designers Westwood is my favourite. She was self taught and really did turn the fashion world on its head!
“British Style Genius: Breaking the Rules” was a great look into behind the scenes of some of the biggest couture houses, definitely go out and see it if you’re a fashion nerd like me.
