What’s not to love about a spot of High Tea? You get to dress up and then eat a ton of fancy sandwiches and cakes! This passed weekend I did just that, partaking in High Tea at Sofi’s Lounge at the Sofitel.
The tradition of High (or Afternoon) Tea apparently began when Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon, so she started to have tea and a light snack to take the edge off . Back then people only ever ate breakfast and dinner (WTF?! How did they survive?). This then began to spread and people thought she was on to something! The name derives from the height of the tables on which the meals are served, high tea being served at the dinner table.
Sofi’s Lounge is an exquisite High Tea experience, as you don’t just get a tiered platter of goodies, but a whole buffet of savoury and sweet treats. You get to choose from an array of sandwiches – sans crusts of course, we aren’t heathens after all – Croque Monsieur, mushroom tartlets, sundried tomato tartlets and savoury crepes. Then there is an amazing selection of petit fours, as well as a chocolate fountain. All this and a complimentary glass of champagne and a pot of tea or coffee. Needless to say I left in a complete food coma!
