Sunday Sessions; The Soundtrack to My Life – New Order

New Order_Sold Out Concert_San Fran

Like a lot of bands from my childhood I don’t remember a time before them, they were always just a part of the soundtrack to my life, and this rings true with New Order. They were always just there playing in the background with their magical synth pop tunes that you can’t help getting your shoulders into (you know the shoulder dance I’m talking about, I bet you’re doing it now!). Born from the ashes of Joy Division after the death of lead singer Ian Curtis, New Order were a huge electronic dance force in the early 80s. I have a lot of vague memories dancing to their clips in the lounge room but I think it was when Frente! brought out their version of Bizarre Love Triangle in 1992 that I remembered how much I loved the original that I became intrigued by New Order.

At that time in my life their music was a new sound for me, as I was predominately listening to either rock or pop and this was all that and more! Their magnificent dance beats were contagious and held a lot more substance for me than the trashy Euro dance beats that were coming out in the early 90s. What I love most about their tracks are that they’re laden with heavy synth and bass and trying to sit still while a song is on is useless! Throughout high school I wore out the scratchy cassettes my brother put together by listening to them over and over again and I don’t think I owned a proper CD until I found the compilation double album Substance 1987 while in Uni.

I never thought I’d get a chance to see them live in concert as I can’t even remember when they toured Australia last, but I was lucky enough to see them in 2014 in San Francisco as they just so happened to be playing in town while we were there! It was an awesome concert with a lot of hands in the air moments and I might have had a tear in my eye when I finally heard Bizarre Love Triangle in all its 12″ mix fabulousness!

Trying to pinpoint a favourite song is über hard!! I especially love the remix to Confusion from the Blade soundtrack (this was my house party jam, yo!) for it’s heavy overdubs but thought I’d stick to something a with little more of an 80s sound. Happy Sunday and enjoy, if you don’t wanna get up and dance after you listen to this you’re dead inside! Think of this song as my Valentine to you all.

  1. Love their music! Like you said, they were always just THERE playing in the background and before you know it you’re bopping away. My oldest son actually interviewed them late last year and said they were awesome.

  2. You have picked one of my favourite song by them
M or should I say the one I know (the second is Blue Monday). Seeing as they come from my home town of Manchester, UK I should be really ashamed I don’t know their stuff better – tut tut. It’s lucky you got to see them in the US!

Now it's your turn...let me know what you think. I love reading your comments! :)
