If I’m going to include the entire soundtrack to my life then skipping out on the band who was probably THE most influential in my formative years would be sheer sacrilege. Yes dear dollface, Jem and The Holograms is the reason why: I love pop/rock music, wanted a keytar desperately, have a passion for fashion, think pink hair is rad and wanted to be a rock star!
Every Saturday morning, without fail, I would wake up at the butt crack of dawn and settle in to watch cartoons and sneak snacks before my family would all wake up at a decent hour. I was obsessed with Jem and really did think she was truly outrageous. I was hooked on the outfits and the wild adventures Jerrica (A.K.A. Jem), Kimber, Shana and Aja went on every week, kicking ass and saving the day from those evil bitches, The Misfits!
For Christmas one year my brother bought me the Shana doll (I guess they were all out of Jem that year) and it came with a rad guitar, even though she played the drums, and a cassette tape with three songs on it. I must have played that tape to death because to this day not only do I know all the lyrics to the two minute ditties but my sister does too! I like to think of that as a little payback for all the Wham! I had to listen too.
This Sunday I want you all to indulge that inner child that still lives there, even if you lock it up tight, and kick off your slippers and use the kitchen bench as your keyboard (don’t tell me I was the only one who did this?!).
